FAQ

General Questions

Q:

What type of users can have access to TRACES?

A:

TRACES is the European Commission's multilingual online sanitary and phytosanitary certification platform supporting the importation of animals, animal products, food and feed of non-animal origin and plants into the European Union, and the intra-EU trade and EU (European Union) exports of animals and certain animal products.

Representatives of operators, authorities, control bodies, border control posts etc. from countries that use TRACES for certification purposes and are involved in the above-mentioned activities can have access to TRACES.

Q:

TRACES - different environments and links. Am I using the correct one?

A:

There are three different versions of TRACES:

There is no automatic data transfer between the three websites. When you want to access all three, you need to request your role for each at the first logging. Therefore, when your (formerly validated) access does not work anymore, make sure you accessed the version of TRACES, where you registered.

Note

Should you need access to any of the other two, please note that you will have to request your role and you will also have to recreate the information about your operator. You can, however, use the same EU Login account for all three versions.

Tip

If you are sure you have logged in to the correct version of TRACES and cannot access the menu, contact the helpdesk for support.

Q:

Does TRACES have a training environment where I could practice the workflow of my documents?

A:

Yes, a training environment is available. Please see the above question for more details.

Q:

Where can I read the TRACES Terms of Use and Privacy Statement?

A:

We kindly invite you to consult the TRACES Terms of use (here) and Privacy Statement (here) as they should include the information you require.

Q:

I have a validated profile in TRACES 'classic'. Why can't I access a certificate on the new platform?

A:

The TRACES Classic application has been entirely replaced by the new TRACES platform and no longer exists. The new system must comply with different security measures; therefore, the old usernames and passwords cannot be transferred from one system to the other. To access TRACES you now need to create an EU Login account and use these credentials to log in to the system.

Q:

As a private person, I will be travelling abroad with my pet. Do I need to be registered in TRACES for this?

A:

We invite you to contact your veterinary authority. If you do not know which authority to contact, please send us a request by email at SANTE-TRACES@ec.europa.eu mentioning the species of the animal, the country of departure and the country of destination so that we may be able to provide you with the right contact information.

Q:

I need some data from TRACES. How can I obtain it?

A:

I am an authority/ European Control Body

The statistical tool that is integrated in TRACES allows the extraction of valuable data in relation to imports into the EU, exports from the EU and intra-Union trade. You can access it from the Analytics section after logging on to TRACES. For assistance with the statistical tool or for other data-related inquiries we kindly invite you to contact the TRACES Helpdesk Team at SANTE-TRACES@ec.europa.eu.

I am an economic operator

We advise contacting your competent authority as they could assist you with your request. If you need further assistance with contacting your competent authority (e.g., contact information), please contact us at SANTE-TRACES@ec.europa.eu.

I am an EU citizen or other interested party

As the data requested belongs to the EU member States and not to the European Commission, releasing data to interested parties is done in accordance with Regulation (EC (EUROPEAN COMMISSION)) No 1049/2001. It is mandatory to inform and consult all member states involved in the request and only release the data with their approval. We kindly invite to send your request for data via email to the Traces Helpdesk Team at SANTE-TRACES@ec.europa.eu. Your email should include a detailed description of the data you require, including the period for which you require the data, the type of goods (commodity codes), how the data should be organized (at EU level, by MS, etc.) and if the data refers to imports to the EU and/or intra-EU trade.

Q:

My Traces NT dashboard - When do certificates appear on the dashboard and when do they disappear from the dashboard?

A:

Which documents users see on their dashboards depends on one hand on their roles.  On the other hand, “pending” should be read as “pending and action from the current user.” It is therefore possible that the certificates may disappear from a user’s dashboard because another colleague has already applied the action, for example registered a control.

There are two places where the dashboard is accessible:

  • directly on the TRACES NT Welcome page the user sees a selection of the oldest documents pending an action from them (or another user with the same role)

  • in the horizontal navigation menu, the user will find a link to a more detailed dashboard, where all the pending documents are displayed sorted by document type.
