FLAG Factsheet
The FLAG is situated in the north-western part of the Warminsko-Mazurskie region, close to the border with Kaliningrad (Russia). The region is home to five small fishing ports and 62 fishing boats (compared to 220 about 10 years ago), usually owned by one or two fishermen. Fishing takes place in the brackish waters of the lagoon, where the main catch is herring but also bream and pikeperch.
Here the fishermen feel that they have very little influence on the decision-making. The ageing population profile is also an issue. Other challenges include outward-migration, limited job opportunities and very few tourism facilities, such as hotel rooms.
Two protected areas: a NATURA 2000 area and a special habitat protection area “Vistula Lagoon and Spit”
The FLAG strategy aims to utilise the specific assets of the area to support business development linked to fisheries and to improve the quality of life.
Based on the unique landscape and natural and cultural heritage the FLAG is planning to increase the area’s attractiveness and develop tourist activities. It would also like to strengthen dialogue between fishermen and administration and develop linkages with research to add value to fisheries products
National
There will be calls for projects, two calls in 2017. All calls will be published on the FLAG website:http://www.lgrzalewwislany.pl/
The area of the FLAG overlaps with the “Partnerstwo Północnej Warmii i Wysoczyzny Elbląskiej” LAG (Northern Warmia and Elbląg Plateau Partnership), and there is a lot of cooperation between these two groups.
The public sector is represented by the four municpalities which make up the FLAG area (Braniewo city, Braniewo rural municipality, Tolkmicko and Frombork). The key social sector organisations include the Association of the Friends of Tolkmicko Area "Lanzania", Educational Association "Drabina" (Ladder), and the Braniewo branch of the Polish Anglers' Association. There are also owners of fishing boat and small entrepreneurs.
