Aquaculture

The Dobrogea South FLAG is situated in the south-eastern part of Romania, in the historical Dobrogea province. The area is bordered to the south by Bulgaria and to the east by the Black Sea.

The FLAG is covered by three mainland municipalities (Follonica, Piombino and Scarlino) and one island (Isola di Capraia), and is situated in the northern Tyrrhenian coast of Italy. While traditional fisheries are still carried on by small fleets in the region, aquaculture has increased significantly over the last decade in terms of workers involved and impact on the economy.

FLAG Juzni Jadran (South Adriatic) is situated in the southern part of the Croatian coast in the Dubrovnik-Neretva County. The main source of income in the area is tourism.

A Galician FLAG has supported the creation of Europe’s first commercial coral farm, growing approximately 5 000 corals annually and attracting school trips of children from around the area.

Zivsaimniecību kooperatīvs apgūst jaunas tehnoloģijas, lai nodrošinātu vietējo austeru krājumu ilgtspēju. Pieņemot austeru mazuļu vākšanas ierīces (“coupelles”), ko izmanto Francijā, Tralī Austeru zivsaimniecību biedrība piedāvā gaišāku nākotni saviem austeru zvejniekiem un to pārstāvētajai vietējai tradīcijai.

The FLAG covers the Pazardzhik rural area but excludes the city of Pazardzhik. The landscape is mostly flat with some mountainous landscapes to the south. Running through the territory is the Maritsa River. Along the Maritsa are several micro dams and six aquaculture companies which are small enterprises using intensive floating cage techniques.

The FLAG’s territory is a coastal area which includes 1.5km of beaches and 670m of sand dunes. The dunes are not just a natural phenomenon, they are specific environmental habitat and an important part of the area’s coastal landscape with great ecological significance.

The Tri Mora FLAG is situated in the central part of Adriatic coast in Zadar County, under the Velebit mountain range and stretching over the Velebit channel.

The Šiauliai FLAG area has a high potential for the development of tourism and recreational activities. Situated in the North of Lithuania, it has a rich cultural heritage and numerous natural monuments. The region has a wealth of inland waterways and ponds which are ideal for the creation and development of fisheries and aquaculture, recreational fishing activities and water sports.

The Ignalina FLAG territory is situated in the east of Lithuania, a region characterised by its many lakes and forests. As such, it has a high potential for the development of recreational, tourism and sports activities. Lakes occupy about 7.7% of the area, forests are about 33.7%, and woodland swamps approximately 10.7%.
