The FLAG covers the administrative region of Middle Franconia, the largest rural district in Bavaria. Ansbach is the main city in the area which is situated 25 miles southwest of Nuernberg, 90 miles north of Munich and is near the Franconian Lake District.

The FLAG area is situated in the south-east of Germany in Bavaria. It is located 95km east of Nurnberg and close to the Czech border. The area’s natural environment consists of forests and many water resources including traditional ponds, rivers and lakes, which offer many leisure and tourism opportunities, and the area is well connected to nationwide transport.

The area is situated in the south-west part of the Baltic Sea. It is a popular tourist destination. The fisheries sector here is still important, though it is generally declining.

The FLAG is situated next to the capital city of Schleswig-Holstein, Kiel in the north of Germany and borders the Baltic sea to the west of this city. As a brack water sea, the Baltic offers only a relatively small number of fish species.

The fisheries area “Nordfriesland Nord” is located on the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein, just under 20 km from the Danish border. It is a rural region with a strong tourism sector. In the immediate vicinity of the FLAG lie the North Frisian Islands of Sylt, Föhr and Amrum and the numerous Hallig islands (tidal islands). The North Sea in this area is part of the German Wadden Sea National Park of Schleswig-Holstein which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The FLAG area is located on the Northern and North-Eastern coast of Estonia. Small-scale coastal fishing of mostly flounder, perch and salmon is the main activity of local fishermen. This fish is mainly marketed directly to end consumers.

Kerry is one of the most sparsely populated counties in Ireland with the most rural and peripheral areas in the county experiencing declining populations over the last 20 years. This is especially true of the coastal regions.

Donegal is a large county with a lengthy coastline featuring a number of long inlets and bays. The region is sparsely populated and outside of Letterkenny, its only large urban centre, there is a high dependence on small-scale agriculture and fisheries enterprises.

The FLAG area is situated in western Greece, in the north-western part of the Peloponnese peninsula. A very large part of the coastal economy is indirectly dependent on fishing, as many activities such as tourism, food services and commerce benefit from marine products.

The FLAG area consists of a combination of mountainous and coastal landscapes. It possesses Greece’s largest lagoon (the Messolonghi lagoon). Most of the fishing activity is small-scale and traditional and takes place in the Messolonghi lagoon.
