Area

The FLAG covers an area of 1 833km2, accounting for just over a third of Prahova county. The region covers the southern slopes of the Southern Carpathians and descends south through the sub-Carpathian hills. Common catches in the region include a local species of perch, trout, pike and carp. Along the Prahova and Teleajen river valleys, there are several trout farms.

Agricultural products in the area include meat, milk, cereals, fruits and grapes; Prahova is known nationally as the ‘land of red wines.’ Other sectors include coal mining, crude oil processing, food, beverages and tobacco. Tourism is growing and now also represents a significant part of the local economy.

Challenges for the area include high unemployment and relatively low educational levels, particularly in rural areas. There are limited job opportunities in the region which has resulted in many young adults migrating to other parts of Romania and across the EU. While tourism is growing, a key challenge is encouraging younger generations to engage with the industry.
