FLAG Factsheet
Kerteminde is located at the north-east of Denmark's second largest island Funen (Fyn), which situated between the island of Zealand and mainland Denmark (Jutland).
The only port left on the island is around Kerteminde. The fishing sector is suffering from the lack of fish and small scale fishing boats have financial difficulties in refitting their boats to catch species that are not included in the quota system.
The fishing industry has been under pressure for many years and its economic influence in society is declining. Despite this trend, new jobs have been created in the blue economy sector. The port of Odense has in recent years expanded to become a major maritime cluster due to its focus on production, handling and storage of heavy components and maritime development including the expansion of repair facilities.
The main challenge in Kerteminde is to support the growth of new companies in the blue sector and at the same time, try to halt the decline of the local fishing industry.
The FLAG area includes three Natura 2002 marine areas and one inland area.
The main priority of the strategy is preserving existing jobs and supporting job creation. In particular, the FLAG aims at:
National
Approved project: Rethinking and rebranding the marine animal research and experience centre as a learning lab for visitors. Before, this centre’s concept was like a more classic “zoo”. The FLAG supported the project promotor in re-vamping it into an educational and experience centre, using modern dynamic methods for communication and introducing learning techniques, which target students and schools.
All LAGs and FLAGs in Denmark use the online system PROMIS; applications can be received at any time. It can be accessed on the PROMIS website.
The Danish Managing Authority examines the applications three times a year (January, March and September indicatively).
The FLAG is a recently founded organisation and quite new in transnational cooperation. It is interested in any kind of cooperation regarding projects that have a job creating outcome.
LAG MANK is responsible for running both the EMFF–CLLD programme in the municipality of Kerteminde and the EAFRD-CLLD programme in the municipalities of Middelfart, Assens, Nordfyn and Kerteminde. An overall strategy pays attention to the maritime as well as the rural strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.
On a daily basis, the MANK FLAG cooperates with the rural MANK LAG on project development, sharing of ideas and mutual administrative support.
