FLAG Factsheet
The peninsula of Setúbal is located in the south of Lisbon and has many urban and suburban centres. Here, fishing is an important activity that has developed over centuries along the Atlantic coast and the estuaries of Sado and Tejo.
Artisanal fishing is important due to the areas important historical, economic and cultural characteristics. We also find small aquaculture production units for oysters, gilt, bass, eel and sole.
The main challenges are the economic development and diversification of activities related to fisheries and aquaculture, promoting innovation and competitiveness of river and sea products, job creation and social cohesion. In addition, it should be remembered that fishermen in the area usually have low educational levels and often have a higher average age than the rest of the population.
