FLAG Factsheets

Fisheries Local Action Groups (FLAGs) are partnerships between fisheries actors and other local private and public stakeholders. Together, they design and implement a local development strategy to address their area´s needs be they economic, social and/or environmental. Based on their strategy, the FLAGs select and provide funding to local projects that contribute to local development in their areas, involving thousands of local stakeholders.

    La Marina FLAG

    La Marina FLAG area consists of seven municipalities on the Mediterranean coastal area of Alicante which are Benidorm, Calp, El Campello, Dénia, Xàbia, Teulada and La Vila Joiosa. The municipalities belong to the three coastal regional provinces of La Marina Alta, La Marina Baixa and y L´Alacantí.

    La Safor FLAG

    The FLAG area consists of four municipalities (Catarroja, Silla, Gandía and El Palmar) which belong to the coastal regions of Ciudad de Valencia, La Safor and l’Horta Sud.

    Santa Pola FLAG

    The Santa Pola FLAG is located in the South East of the Iberian Peninsula and covers the municipalities of Santa Pola and Guardamar. The main economic activities in both localities are fishing, aquaculture and tourism; salt production in salt lakes is also quite relevant.

    Murcia FLAG

    The FLAG area covers the six coastal municipalities of the region of Murcia in southern Spain. It stretches over 312km of coastline and includes the biggest saltwater lagoon in the Mediterranean, the Mar Menor. The local economy is based strongly on tourism in the north of the area, especially around the Mar Menor.

    Menorca FLAG

    Menorca is one of the Balearic Islands located in the Mediterranean Sea. The Menorca FLAG consists of eight municipalities which are Mahón, Ciutadella, Alayor, Es Mercadal, Ferreries, Es Castell, San Luis and Es Migjorn Gran. Tourism stands out as the main sector in the area accounting for 80% of the islands economic activity. Other industries include jewellery and traditional footwear.

    Ibiza FLAG

    Ibiza and Formentera, known as the Pitiusas Islands, are located at the western edge the Balearic archipelago, in the Mediterranean Sea. The economy of Ibiza and Formentera is characterised by a notable tourism sector.

    Almeria Coast FLAG

    The Almería Coast FLAG is situated in the eastern part of the Almería province with an area spanning approximately 1 500km2. The region has longstanding fishing tradition but in recent years, the industry has been in decline.

    Western Almeria FLAG

    Poniente Almeriense is situated in the southwest of the Almería province and comprises a 35km coastline. It is boarded to the north by the Sierra de Gádor and the Alborán Sea to the south. West of the FLAG area is the municipality of Albuñol (Granada) and to the east is the Gulf of Almería. From a social perspective, there is a strong unity between the FLAG area’s four municipalities.

    Granada Coast FLAG

    The FLAG area’s coastline is very rugged, formed by steep cliffs and hillsides. Its proximity to Africa and the Sierra Nevada Mountains protects the area’s coastline from the cold winds of the north, thus creating a subtropical microclimate. The region has approximately 320 days of sun per year and an average temperature of 20°C. It is one of the most densely populated regions in Andalucía

    Malaga FLAG

    The FLAG area comprises six coastal municipalities which all have a strong marine and fishing tradition and culture. The area, like most in the coastal enclaves of the Mediterranean, has a large population. The services industry, particularly the tourism sector, accounts for a high percentage of businesses, jobs, and sales in the area.
