Area

Poniente Almeriense is situated in the southwest of the Almería province and comprises a 35km coastline. It is boarded to the north by the Sierra de Gádor and the Alborán Sea to the south. West of the FLAG area is the municipality of Albuñol (Granada) and to the east is the Gulf of Almería. From a social perspective, there is a strong unity between the FLAG area’s four municipalities.

The primary sector in the region is greenhouse agriculture and there are many associated small companies conducting activities auxiliary to the industry. The tourism industry also plays an important role in the area, especially in Roquetas de Mar. In Adra, Balanegra, Balerma and Roquetas de Mar fishing has always been a traditional economic activity and still is today. There are two main fishing ports, three fish markets and the fishing fleet is divided into purse seine, trawling, and longline fishing.

A key challenge for the FLAG area is maintaining and increasing the competitiveness of its fisheries sector. Social inclusion in the industry is also a concern, as is a lack of training opportunities for women and young adults, particularly in the diversification of fisheries activities.
