FLAG Factsheet
The region is in the northern part of Saxony, close to the border of the federal states of Brandenburg and Saxony-Anhalt; it has a typical agricultural landscape with several protected areas.
The regions fisheries tradition is over 500 years old. Of the 18km2 expanse of water in the FLAG area, roughly 8km2 are made up of ponds. Local fish companies are the most important aspect of the area’s aquaculture as they not only produce, refine and directly sell but also continually investigate and develop new production and refinement methods.
The main challenge for the FLAG area is to support local companies in a way that also benefits the local community. Opportunities for this support include tourism activities and actions that raise awareness for local fish as food to the local population. Further opportunities are to regenerate and develop pond areas, which are no longer in use.
The FLAG area has six nature and 12 landscape protected areas. The biggest forests in the area are Wermsdorfer Wald and Dahlener Heide, which is situated in the centre of the region. Elbaue, located in the North, is also a protected area.
The FLAG has three main strategic objectives:
Regional (Saxony)
The FLAG's project ideas include:
The FLAG makes regular calls for projects which are published on the FLAG’s website. Despite these calls for projects having specific deadlines, the FLAG also welcomes potential applicants to get in touch, outside of these deadlines, to nurture developing project ideas.
The FLAG is interested in working on cooperation projects with other FLAGs with a pond farming industry. The FLAG is also interested in national and transnational cooperation projects focused on fisheries events and marketing, the labelling of fisheries products and the developments in low-impact tourism.
The FLAG is integrated with the LEADER LAG Sächsisches Zweistromland-Ostelbien. The FLAG territory, structure and organisation are the same as those of the LAG. The FLAG strategy is a part of the LEADER strategy.
