Area

The Macin Branch FLAG is in the western extremity of Tulcea county and males up roughly 12% of its total area. The Danube meadow forms the lowest part of FLAG area and comprises several wetlands which include pond and marsh habitats.

Central to the local economy is stone quarrying in the "triangle of granite” which encompasses Macin, Greci, and Turcoaia. Other industry includes wood exploitation and processing, metal processing for the automotive sector, agricultural manufacturing and traditional handicrafts. The development of small-scale fishing enterprises and services is essential to the area’s economy. The fisheries of the area include a total of 133 species, of which around 30 are exploited commercially. Fishing in the area is a traditional activity and is deep-rooted in the area’s culture.

The main challenges for the FLAG area relate to its aging population and negative net migration. This has had a strong impact on the area both socially and economically. A reduction in the economically active population has impacted the growth and rejuvenation of its fisheries sector.
