Area

The FLAG covers the administrative region of Middle Franconia, the largest rural district in Bavaria. Ansbach is the main city in the area which is situated 25 miles southwest of Nuernberg, 90 miles north of Munich and is near the Franconian Lake District.

The FLAG territory comprises over 3 200 ponds and covers a total area of 7km2. Many of the ponds have been used for centuries in what is a longstanding tradition of carp production in the area. Nowadays, most of the carp production in the area is conducted by farmers as a supplementary income. Creating a viable market for the carp, both locally and further afield, is a challenge to the FLAG area. As are diversifying fisheries activities into what is a growing tourism industry in the area.
