FLAG Factsheet
Geologically, the FLAG area falls in Campi Flegrei caldera, a volcanic area northwest of Naples, where both active and extinct craters exist. This area is also part of a regional park. Fish farms are present along the coast line. In the past, the small-scale fishing industry has been one of the main sources of income for the local population, though today's fishing industry is declining. In the current socio-economic context, tourist activities drive the local economy.
The challenges for the FLAG include providing help for the small-scale fishermen of the area so that they can become better organised, improve their competitiveness, diversify their activities, and create linkages between fisheries and tourism. The supply chains are not adapted to the needs and potential of the area.
There are several Marine Protected Areas (Isolotto di San Martino, Torre Fumo, Punta Pennata, Baia) and several Sites of Community Importance (Lago Lucrino, Lago d’Averno, Monte Nuovo, Capo Miseno, Isolotto di San Martino, Lago Fusaro, Lago Miseno e Foce di Licola) to be found here.
The FLAG seeks to relaunch the fishing community’s activities by providing tools and opportunities to modernise the fisheries sector through an approach based on environmental, social and economic sustainability principles. At the same time, it seeks the integration of the fisheries sector with the other economic sectors in the area, safeguarding long-term employment and the economic well-being of the local coastal community.
FLAG actions will support new fisheries and aquaculture activities and will strengthen the professionalism of existing businesses. In addition, the FLAG seeks to promote the diversification of activities into tourism and the processing of local fish products linked to the territorial, social and cultural identity of the area.
National and regional
The small-scaled fisheries sector is an important component of the economy in the Campania region, and the FLAG will help trigger sustainable development processes making the sector more competitive and viable.
The FLAG is interested in interregional and transnational cooperation on supporting competitiveness of the small-scaled fishermen and creating links with tourism.
The Flegrea FLAG informally cooperates with the Cilento Blue Sea FLAG in the region and with the Venetian FLAG in Veneto.
