FLAG Factsheets

Fisheries Local Action Groups (FLAGs) are partnerships between fisheries actors and other local private and public stakeholders. Together, they design and implement a local development strategy to address their area´s needs be they economic, social and/or environmental. Based on their strategy, the FLAGs select and provide funding to local projects that contribute to local development in their areas, involving thousands of local stakeholders.

    Mures Basin FLAG

    The FLAG territory is specifically focused on aquaculture and partially includes the areas of two counties, Alba and Hunedoara, which are situated along the Mureș river basin. Economic activities in the region are spread among the construction, commerce and services, agriculture and fisheries, and tourism sectors.

    Galati FLAG

    The FLAG is located in the southeast of Galati county. Apart from the Danube, the FLAG area also includes two main rivers, the Prut and the Siret, lakes and ponds. Fishing here is mainly small-scale and inland.

    Macin Branch FLAG

    The Macin Branch FLAG is in the western extremity of Tulcea county and males up roughly 12% of its total area. The Danube meadow forms the lowest part of FLAG area and comprises several wetlands which include pond and marsh habitats.

    Delta Dunarii (Danube) FLAG

    The Danube Delta FLAG area comprises 25 administrative units and covers two contrasting geographical zones: the wetland of the Danube delta and the continental zone. The most valuable opportunities in the FLAG area include its significant tourist potential due to its traditional gastronomy and an impressive variety of beautiful natural and cultural landscapes.

    The Dobrogea South FLAG is situated in the south-eastern part of Romania, in the historical Dobrogea province. The area is bordered to the south by Bulgaria and to the east by the Black Sea.

    FLAG Mangalia Litoral is in the south-east of Romania. The territory borders Bulgaria to the south and the Black Sea to the east and is characterised by coastal cliffs, coastlines and low floodplains.

    The FLAG area is located in the Braila Plainm in the South-east of the country, in the basins of the Danube, Calmăţui and Siret rivers. The natural environment, through its hydrographic network, relief, vegetation and fauna, fosters the development of the fisheries sector and tourism.

    Calarasi Danube FLAG

    The FLAG territory is flat, located in the South-East of the country and consists of the Bărăgan plain and the Danube meadow. In the FLAG area, there are natural coastline wetlands with great biological diversity.

    Giurgiu FLAG

    The FLAG is situated in the southern and central part of the Romanian Plain. The landscape is flat, crossed by many small rivers. To the north are the Argeş and Dâmboviţa Rivers. To the south, the area covers 55km of the Danube River which also marks the Bulgarian border.

    Neamt FLAG

    FLAG Neamt is in North-eastern Romania. The region is predominantly rural with an economy mainly based on agriculture (including fishing and aquaculture), forestry and tourism. The region’s primary sectors include the chemical and processing industries.
