FLAG Factsheets

Fisheries Local Action Groups (FLAGs) are partnerships between fisheries actors and other local private and public stakeholders. Together, they design and implement a local development strategy to address their area´s needs be they economic, social and/or environmental. Based on their strategy, the FLAGs select and provide funding to local projects that contribute to local development in their areas, involving thousands of local stakeholders.

    South Danube FLAG

    The FLAG is a geographically homogeneous area located in the south of Teleorman county on the left bank of the Danube River. The main fishing area is located along the 85km long coastline.

    Olt FLAG

    The FLAG is located between the Danube and Olt rivers and benefits from various fishing and aquaculture resources that allow opportunities for activities such as tourism or sport fishing.

    Dolj-Danube FLAG

    The FLAG is situated in the southern part of the Dolj county, on the Danube, and on the border with Bulgaria. Agriculture is the region’s primary sector as the land is naturally suited for growing cereals, vegetables and fruit.

    Southwest Danube FLAG

    The FLAG is situated along the Danube, between the regions of Hinova and Vrata. The region comprises a 74km2 stretch of the Danube river and includes many meadow, river banks and natural ponds.

    Lotru Middle Olt FLAG

    The FLAG area is situated along the river Olt. In the territory are ten urban and rural communes which all have small-scale fisheries and aquaculture industries. Other activities such as agriculture, chemical production, forestry, food and tourism dominate the local economy. Local handicrafts are recognised and sold nationwide.

    Botosani FLAG

    The FLAG is predominantly located in rural areas where activities such as agriculture and fishing are commonplace. The region is situated between Siret and Prut, in the north-east part of Romania. The territory boarders Ukraine in the north and Moldova in the east. At the west and south it has borders with the Suceava and Iași Counties.

    Prahova FLAG

    The FLAG covers an area of 1 833km2, accounting for just over a third of Prahova county. The region covers the southern slopes of the Southern Carpathians and descends south through the sub-Carpathian hills.

    Fagaras FLAG

    The FLAG territory comprises the habitable area of the northernmost part of the Făgăraș Mountains, in the county of Brasov. The area is situated in the geographical centre of Romania and the Olt river runs through the FLAG’s territory, one of the country’s most important rivers.

    Dunarea Dobrogeana FLAG

    The FLAG territory is in the northwest of Constanta County. In the centre of the territory is the city of Harsova which is surrounded by the four communes of Ghindaresti, Horia, Topalu and Crucea. The area situated between the Danube and the Black Sea is characterised by rolling hills and is steeped in history.

    Valea Mostistea FLAG

    The Mostiștea river is a tributary of the river Danube in Romania. The river source is near the village Dascălu, northeast of Bucharest and it flows into the Danube near Mânăstirea. The local economy of the area is predominantly agricultural. Fisheries and aquaculture activities are small-scale and often combined with agri-tourism and recreational activities.
