Information about the commitment

Background to the commitment (if any) The beer sector is aware that pregnant and breastfeeding women must not drink any type of alcohol. It puts in danger the life of the baby, and the whole society could be affected by this antisocial action.
Cerveceros de España is strong opposed to pregnancy and drinking and fully supports measures and initiatives targeted at the problem. We support educational and preventive programs as the best avenues to transmit responsible messages to pregnant and breastfeeding women.
The creative of “UN EMBARAZO SIN” is characterized by the use of a positive and educational language to transmit to gynecologist and obstetricians, and in particular to pregnant and breastfeeding women, the message of the campaign, without using the repression. In the campaign’s image appears a pregnant woman with the message “because he drinks what you drink” (“porque él bebe lo que tú bebes”).
Priority areas
  • Develop information and education programmes on the effect of harmful drinking

Description of the implementation of the commitment
Information and education aimed to pregnant, breast feeding women and gynaecologist and midwives. Gynecologist and midwives that treat directly to pregnant women, inform on the incompatibility of the consumption of alcohol during the period gestacional.

In 2006, we signed an agreement with the Spanish Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics (SEGO) and we run out "Un embarazo SIN" campaign. Materials have included 3 Social awareness actions with the slogan: “Because the baby drinks what you drink”: presentation at national SEGO Congress in Barcelona to 700 doctors, local media and authorities presentation, press conference presentation to media in Madrid, brochure distribution to women in clinics and hospitals and 500,000 leaflets to 8,000 gynecologists.

In 2012, we worked on investigating new ways to transmit the message, in this case, through the Spanish Society of Midwives. After several meetings, we signed an agreement with them.

The objectives of the agreement are the following:

1. Development of information materials. Specifically, the publication of a consensus document on beer and lactation, to be presented to public,
2. Participation in activities to promote accurate information about nutritional guidelines for women who are breastfeeding, food choices for a prudent diet / healthy , allowing a satisfactory nutritional status, informing, educating and guiding and informing the incompatibility of alcohol consumption in this period and the option to include in the diet non-alcoholic beer

The consensus document is still pending for approval.
