Reaction Cyprus has established a mobile friendly alcohol test unit since 2014. The unit organizes actions in co-operation with local authorities, organizations, volunteers, education institutions against drinking and driving. More specifically the actions, called Friendly Alcotests take place outside of popular venues like bars, clubs, restaurants and concerts where people are offered a voluntary friendly alcotest when they arrive at the venue and one after their night ends and they are ready to leave. The two alcohol test are then compared in order for the person to know the effect the alcohol he/she has consumed to their physical and mental abilities. Should the level of alcohol exceeds the legal limits the volunteers advise the individual not to drive home while free water, snacks and even a free ride is offered in order to make sure driving is not an option. The latest actions happened in the 2nd quarter of 2016 and the 1st quarter of 2017. Friendly alcohol tests took place in all the cities of Cyprus, in major cities in Greece like Athens and Thessaloniki and in major tourist destinations in Greece like Mykonos, Paros, Santorini, Salamina, Paros, Paxoi and many more. On the 15th of October 2016 a huge action took place all over Cyprus with the help of hundreds of volunteers, off-duty members of the local police force, a local Greek language Institute and its students, taxi drivers and major local organizations. Thousands of alcotests were performed and many many drivers did not drive after their tests exceeded the legal limits. Same friendly alcotests took place in August-September 2016 in all the aforementioned Greek destinations while an additional action took place in January 2017 outside a popular night club that hosted the new year party of a large organization in Cyprus with hundreds of guests. The main idea of the action is to give the opportunity to citizens coming our of specific bars, clubs, restaurants etc to take a voluntary alcohol breath test in order for them to know the level of alcohol in their blood. The overall goal of the action is to raise awareness and inform the public of the dangers of combining alcohol and driving. The results of the preliminary and final tests are reviewed and studied in order to identify the percentage of drivers that actually drink during their night out and plan to drive home later on. Identical actions are planned in 2017, especially during the summer season and the Easter and Christmas holidays.
To offer friendly alcohol tests to people going and leaving from bars, clubs, restaurants, concerts etc. By comparing the results of the preliminary test and the final tests are the end of their night they are able to understand what is the effect of the amount of alcohol they consumed to their physical and mental capacity. Following the final tests the drivers are advised not to drive should their alcohol percentage exceeds the legal limits, while they are being offered free water, snacks and free rides to their homes to avoid possible accidents.
