The Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH) was established in 1990. The GVH celebrated its 25th anniversary with a conference held in November. As one of the first competition authorities established in the Central European region, the GVH is proud of its achievements. Its main aim is to serve the public interest, as it has done in the past 25 years.
After welcoming speeches, the former and present presidents of the GVH spoke about the history of the Authority and about how a strong and modern competition law system has been developed over the past 25 years. In their view, the period immediately following the establishment of the Authority was devoted to dismantling the existing order which was based on a command economy and increasing the role of competition and markets, succeeded by a period focused on the implementation of the Competition Act and preparation for accession to the EU. At present, the main goal of the Authority is the fine-tuning of the regulatory background.
In the other sections, speakers discussed the role of competition policy in the transitional economies, the consumer protection role of competition authorities and, as a nowadays increasingly emerging issue, the competition concerns relating to the exchange of information and the creation of information databases.
Speakers coming from the European Commission, the OECD and national competition authorities, and more than 200 guests from abroad and home participated at the event. The organisers received a lot of positive feedback from participants.
