The Norwegian Competition Authority has the last year made a thorough inquiry into the purchasing conditions in the Norwegian grocery market. The inquiry shows significant differences in the grocery chains’ purchase prices.

On the 12 of June 2019, the Swedish Competition Authority published a report entitled ‘Power over Our Cars – A Report on Auto Insurance and the Auto Repairs Market’. The report highlights a number of competition and consumer-related issues between car manufacturers, auto insurance and auto repair shops.

Competition must be trusted in granting 5G frequency licences

The Competition Authority formed an opinion about the competition of frequency licenses in the frequency band of 3,410-3,800 MHz, as a result of which, the undertakings acquiring the licenses will start building a so-called 5G network for communications services.

Conference on State Aid Law and Small and Medium Sized Enterprises 2019, Czech Republic, 29-31 May

The Office for the Protection of Competition in cooperation with the Ministry of Industry and Trade organized a three-day international conference on State Aid and issues of small and medium-sized enterprises between 29 and 31 May 2019. Mr. Petr Rafaj, the Chairman of the Office, welcomed almost 150 conference attendees from various countries.

Working Group on Competition Economics discusses fuel markets, minority shareholdings and the modernisation of abuse control

Bonn, 8 February 2019: On 8 February 2019 the Working Group on Competition Economics held its third meeting in Bonn where Bundeskartellamt staff and economic researchers discussed topical competition economics issues.

The agenda of the meeting included the impact of the Market Transparency Unit for Fuels, the application of competition law to minority shareholdings and the discussion on modernising abuse control as a possible response to the growing market power of large digital platforms.

Bundeskartellamt - Review of 2018

Bonn, 20 December 2018: In 2018 the Bundeskartellamt imposed fines in cartel proceedings totalling approx. 376 million euros, examined around 1,300 merger notifications, decided on more than 110 applications for review in public procurement cases and conducted numerous abuse of dominance proceedings. With its new competencies in the area of consumer protection the authority uncovered shortcomings e.g. in the area of online comparison websites.

Bundeskartellamt sees need for action on comparison websites

Bonn, 12 December 2018: Today the Bundeskartellamt presented the results of its sector inquiry into online comparison websites. The inquiry into a large number of comparison websites from the areas of travel, energy, insurance, telecommunications and financial services has in some areas confirmed the suspicions of consumer rights violations. The companies concerned will now have the possibility to comment on the consultation paper, which was published today.
