3rd EMODnet-MSFD Coordination Meeting (8-9 December 2015, Brussels)

Table of Contents
    The aim of the EMODnet-MSFD Coordination meetings are to consider and discuss EMODnet progress and product development with relevance for Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) and marine environmental monitoring and reporting. This meeting will have a specific focus on Seabed Habitat Mapping challenges and how EMODnet Seabed Habitats can contribute to the MSFD assessment process. The meeting will also consider progress and opportunties to contribute by other portals such as EMODnet Chemistry, Biology and Human Activities (see for full range of portals and data resources).

    Day 1 – Tuesday 8 December 2015 meetings starts at 14:00

    1. Welcome and introductions

    2. Agreement on objectives and agenda of the meeting

    3. EMODnet-MSFD status update

    • Short recap on EMODnet goals and current state of play – Iain Shepherd (DG MARE)
    • Short recap and updates on MSFD recent developments including last WG DIKE meeting – David Connor
    • Status update of actions from previous meeting - Regional Sea Conventions (RSC) and EMODnet Chemistry/Biology/Human Activities report on progress since last meeting  
    • Short update on relevant external initiatives (if any)
    1. General feedback from RSC and Member States (MS) on usefulness of existing EMODnet data, services and products in view of current practices (how are descriptors calculated now) and what is needed to make these EMODnet products suitable for use? – RSC and MS representatives

    15:30-16:00 Coffee break

    1. Identification of specific seabed habitat data and products needed by Regional Sea Conventions (RSC) and Member States (MS) which could be provided by EMODnet Seabed Habitats  

    • Lessons learned and requirements from using seabed habitat maps - RSC and MS representatives 
    • Requirements for specific indicators/descriptors (e.g. descriptor 6: sea floor integrity ensures functioning of the ecosystem) – RSC and MS representatives

      Day 2 – Wednesday 9 December 2015 meetings starts at 9:00

      1. Invited presentation - dr. Angel Borja (DEVOTES) - TBC
        Followed by a discussion on potential EMODnet activities to examine use-cases of relevance to MSFD for a particular sea basin as a way to identify gaps and identify steps to make EMODnet relevant for MSFD.

      2. Identification of specific biology, chemistry and human activities data and products needed by Regional Sea Conventions (RSC) and Member States (MS) which could be provided by EMODnet Seabed Habitats - RSC and MS representatives
