We don't know exactly how much comes to the sea through rivers, how much is washed off beaches and how much is lost from ships. But when we find plastic bottletops in the stomachs of birds or turtles, we know that something needs to be done.

Implementing EU legislation on marine litter

The Single Use Plastics Directive and Port Reception Facilities Directive of 2019 made producers and importers responsible for transport and disposal of end-of-life fishing gear and removed financial penalties for bringing waste to shore, including litter picked up in fishing nets. They also introduced new reporting obligations. The aim of the conference was to allow stakeholders to share experience and ideas.

Workshop on the implementation of EU legislation related to waste fishing gear and passively fished waste in ports

In the first half of 2019, the European Parliament and Council adopted two flagship Directives – one on Port Reception Facilities (PRF) and one on Single-Use Plastics (SUP), with the goal to reduce plastic pollution of the oceans and to improve waste delivery and management in ports. The Commission actively supports the implementation of these Directives with a strong link the developments under the EU Green Deal and the circular economy package.

Moving forward on EU measures for proper waste management of fishing gear

The Commission has adopted a number of proposals for appropriate collection and treatment of fishing gear and fragments of fishing gear once it is damaged beyond repair. Based on these proposals, Council and Parliament are close to signing them into EU law. The aim of the informal meeting was to inform the manufacturers, distributors and users of fishing gear of progress and to look at the next steps
