IMSC is an aquaculture company, situated on the East Coast of Ireland in County Wicklow. Its focus is on the sustainable recruitment of mussel seed and further cultivation to fully grown Mussel for sale to international seafood markets.
The problem we are solving
IMSC will produce mussel which is organic, ASC Certified and sustainable in terms of production method. The main advantage is that buyers demand continuity of supply which IMSC will provide. In the Irish context, IMSC holds an advantage over other mussel operators because the aquaculture licence to produce seed at scale is the only licence of its type on the East coast of Ireland. The east coast is where the most productive sea bed sites for growing mussel to full size are located. It is notoriously difficult to obtain such a licence.
Sustainable impact on Blue Economy
This business contributes in the following ways to the sustainability of the blue economy and environment: Mussel sequester carbon as they grow at a rate of 218 kg CO2-eq per tonne of mussels harvested. With a total production of 4500T, this equates to 981T of carbon per year. The Irish Mussel industry is suffering from a decline in wild mussel seed stocks (raw material) which has resulted in the decline of the industry. IMSC will bolster Irish production with seed cultivated on suspended structures ensuring continuity of supply. This will also reduce the pressures on wild stocks while demonstrating a sustainable business model and production process.
