Coastal mapping in EMODnet - new project launched

Better knowledge of the topography of Europe's coast will contribute to safer navigation, better coastal protection measures and a lower cost for designing and building offshore infrastructure such as pipelines, communications cables, gas platforms, aquaculture cages or offshore wind turbines. Easier access to data will enable innovative new services to develop in support of these activities.

The partners in this project will:

1. develop digital maps
   • Develop an infrastructure enabling partners to prepare, update, aggregate and disseminate data produced by them, as well as develop tools to prepare and optimize data, provide high performance services disseminating the prepared layers with respect to INSPIRE recommendations, propose an ergonomic web portal and provide training to potential users.
2. share experience and best practice
   • Assess consistency of the existing vertical datum, list and summarize past experiences and best practices, develop and test an algorithm for choosing the most appropriate surveying method, and build a technical and economic strategy.
3. prepare future mapping programme
   • Develop a Joint European Coastal Mapping Programme in shallow waters for bathymetric data
