A set of studies have been commissioned by the European Commission's Directorate General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries on economic activities that depend on the sea – both traditional ones such as fishing and shipbuilding and emerging ones such as renewable energy.

The studies examine, country by country, the nature and level of these activities in terms of economic value added and employment. They analyse how they are changing with time and the factors that are driving these changes. The studies go on to assess trends in each of the major European sea-basins – theAtlantic, the Baltic, the Black Sea, the Mediterranean and the North Sea.

The studies reflect the opinions and findings of the consultants. They do not reflect views of the European Union and its Member States or any of the European Union institutions.
