Outcome of EU-Japan meeting to assess risk to marine environment from Fukushima

A meeting on 3 October, 2011, was held to (1) assess the risk of contaminated seafood reaching the EU market (2) determine whether the EU marine science community could assist their Japanese colleagues following the catastrophic events of March 2011. They were a follow-up to an earlier risk assessment meeting on 16 May 2011 and the EU Japan summit of 28 May 2011.

Study 2006-15 lot 5: Recuperation of fishing nets lost or abandoned at sea

Large-scale recovery campaigns of lost or abandoned fishing nets will be organized and as much as possible will ghost nets be recovered. Focus is on deep sea areas. Main objective is to estimate the quantity of ghost nets on the seabed. Why this study?

This report presents a description of the Community fleet using bottom gears (fishing gears which are in contact with the seabed) on the high seas (waters located beyond national jurisdiction), together with an analysis of its economic and social importance.
