EMODNET thematic assembly groups

Each EMODnet action gathers a partnership into a thematic assembly group. There are groups for bathymetry, geology, biology, chemistry, physics, habitats and human activity.  Each group aims to gather to relevant marine measurements within at least two sea–basins, to provide each measurement with comparable descriptors or metadata such as time and place of measurement and quality of measurement. These data are then processed into contiguous data layers over the whole sea basin. In addition maps are being prepared indicating where there are observations, where there are observations but the observations are not available and where the observations are missing. It is intended that all data and map layers be freely available.

Title
New insights into European maritime traffic

The new EMODnet digital vessel density maps allows users to visualise vessel movement patterns and the distribution of maritime traffic in European waters. The service provides access to monthly composite maps by ship type for the year 2017 (with more to come). Maps are available free of charge for viewing, downloading, processing and usage for commercial and non-commercial purposes alike from the EMODnet Human Activities portal (http://www.emodnet-humanactivities.eu/view-data.php).

EMODnet Annual Report 2016

2016 was a successful year for EMODnet. We have already achieved what we set out to do by 2020; deliver a complete multi-resolution seabed map of European seas. EMODnet is now a reference source of data for those working in the coastal and offshore blue economy. It is already improving the forecasting of storm surges and helping national and regional authorities develop spatial plans and report the state of their marine environment.

EMODnet Checkpoint Methods Workshop

This Workshops will focus on streamlining the EMODnet Sea-basin checkpoint methodology. The Sea-basin Checkpoints perform stress test of the adequacy of the current observational capacity at a regional/sea-basin level and their results contribute to the improvement of EMODnet. The EMODnet Stakeholder Conference (14-15 February 2017, Brussels) highlighted the different approaches and methods applied by the sea-basin checkpoints stressing the need to assess best practices and a common way forward.
