PROJECT DESCRIPTION
BACKGROUND
Bio-waste constitutes just over a third (34%) of all urban waste in Europe. Coffee grounds make up a significant proportion of bio-waste (20 million tonnes worldwide), which can be valorised as substrate in the production of edible mushrooms.
The construction and packaging sectors consume 78% of global plastic production, which is mostly derived from fossil fuels. The management of their waste streams has environmental and health impacts.
OBJECTIVES
The PermaLIFE project aims to demonstrate the large-scale production of a natural, innovative and circular myco-material for use in the insulation and packaging sector. The circular biomaterial will be obtained from urban organic waste naturally transformed by the mycelium.
RESULTS
Expected results:
- Creation of a production line of 5 tonnes of myco-materials per month (equivalent to 637 m² of myco-material);
- Production of 6.5 tonnes of myco-materials (insulation panels and packaging);
- Recycling of 8 tonnes of municipal (organic) waste;
- Reduction of CO2 emissions by 27 tonnes; and
- Creation of five jobs.
