PROJECT DESCRIPTION
BACKGROUND
Around 60 billion till receipts are printed in Europe every year. The type of paper used most frequently is thermal paper, whose heat sensitive properties make it suitable for thermal printers. Thermal paper is moreover convenient, relatively inexpensive and hardwearing.
The annual production of till receipts consumes 5 million of trees, 3 billion litres of water and more than 4 million barrels of oil, while generating more than 120 000 tonnes of greenhouse gases. Production also requires non-recyclable waste and toxic substances such as bisphenols.
Till receipts nevertheless have a legal function that it is necessary to maintain. One option is to send receipts by email or to store them on customer accounts, although such paperless solutions also have a carbon footprint. The Ticketless project, however, offers a way of avoiding storing large amounts of data in data centers while also protecting personal information. Its sustainable solution comprises:
- An application programming interface plugged to relevant software; and
- An application available from Google Play and App Store that generates and stores receipts.

The Ticketless_LIFE project aims to:
- Offer an economically competitive sales receipt solution;
- Create a solution that has environmental advantages over current practices;
