PROJECT DESCRIPTION
BACKGROUND
The overall concept behind Athens_Wave is to mature a set of energy efficiency related interventions and deliver an investments pipeline regarding two bundles of public sector buildings, with a special geographical focus in the city of Athens, thus leading to important primary energy savings, GHG reduction and improved indoor and outdoor air quality. The project will contribute to the European Green Deal’s Renovation Wave and will help pave the way for a decarbonized and clean energy system, focusing also to the targets set by the REPower EU plan to decrease dependency on fossil fuels. Initiatives included in the Athens_Wave have significant added value in terms of energy efficiency and sustainability, as they will not only lead to lower energy consumption levels, but will also contribute to the achievement of local, national and European targets related to energy retrofit of public buildings and emissions’ reduction. A lower environmental footprint will be also achieved through the reduction of air pollution in the city of Athens. The latter is one of the 100 Cities Participating in the EU Mission for Climate-neutral, Smart cities by 2030, therefore is a lighthouse example for future replicability and visibility. Through Energy Performance Contracting, Athens_Wave aims at achieving an enhanced level of private investments, thus blending public and private financing. In addition, an innovative organizational structure shall be set up in order to safeguard proper implementation and monitoring of the project. Capacity building events and workshops will take place in order to increase environmental skills of stakeholders and raise public awareness.
