PROJECT DESCRIPTION
BACKGROUND
The greenhouse emissions created by agriculture make up 10% of the total European Union emissions. Furthermore, energy supply in rural areas is provided by electricity networks and fossil fuels that are responsible for an additional 2% of the total EU greenhouse emissions.
Renewable energy production is currently not widely used in rural areas in Spain where, unlike in urban areas, electricity networks are usually far away from where the power is needed. The environmental issues being created by meeting energy demand in rural areas (through the use of fossil fuels and the expansion of electricity networks) are therefore currently much higher than in urban, peri-urban or industrial areas.
OBJECTIVES
The main goal of LIFE+ REWIND was to demonstrate the technical, environmental and economic feasibility of using renewable energy sources in the farming sector and other rural industries in Spain using the wine industry as an example. The project also promoted the regular use of these sustainable practices.
