(1) Pre-primary education schools provide only pre-primary education. Only the ones authorised by the education authority are included
(2) Primary education schools, primary and compulsory secondary education schools, and primary, compulsory secondary education and Bachillerato/vocational training institutions can also provide pre-primary education
(3) Compulsory secondary education and/or Bachillerato and/or vocational training institutions provide one or several of the following types of studies: compulsory secondary education, Bachillerato and/or vocational training cycles and/or other training programmes. The actions of other training programmes are not included
(4) Publicly-funded private institutions are private institutions which are totally or partly financed with public funds. Publicly-funded private institutions whose students are exclusively completing the work placement module of vocational training are not included in this table.
(5) In the Autonomous Community of Navarre there are also 11 public pre-primary schools (first cycle) with 790 pupils whose requirements are being verified by the Department for Education.

University institutions

In the 2015/16 academic year, the Spanish university system is made up 84 universities.

Of the 84 universities, 50 are public and 34 private. The number of private universities has been proliferating over the past years, with an average of one new university being created each year.

The following numbers are recorded during this period:

  • 343 campuses, of which 274 (79.9%) belong to public universities and 69 (20.1%) to private universities
  • 1 049 institutions, of which 858 (81.8%) belong to public universities and 191 (18.2%) to private universities
  • 2 910 departments, of which 2 377 (81.7%) belong to public universities and 533 (18.3%) to private universities.

Universities have other types of units, such as: university institutes, PhD schools, hospitals and foundations.
