The 2010 University Student Statute grants special importance to the activities for comprehensive guidance and support to university students, set up as a right and a service to be organised and provided by universities. In this sense, universities must boost tutorial systems integrating in a coordinated manner the actions for students information, guidance and training support. So, students will receive cross-curricular guidance and monitoring for their degree. Every tutorship must be accessible for every disabled student.

With the purpose of implementing this Statute, the General Subdirectorate of Grants and Student Support, Guidance and Professional Insertion, depending on the General Directorate of University Policy, develops the following functions:

  • To implement a comprehensive support system for students and university graduates in the framework of the European Higher Education Area, meeting their needs and demands in the new education and social context.
  • To promote specialised support programmes aimed at future students and university graduates, in order to make easier commitment processes, professional career and the access to continuing training.

Academic Guidance

The University Student Statute establishes tutorial systems, among which qualification tutorships. These tutorships aim at guiding students in their learning processes. On this manner, these tutorships must:

  • Make easier the transition and adaptation process of the student to the university environment.
  • Provide information, guidance and resources for learning.
  • Offer the curricular itinerary, taking into account the specificities of students with special education needs.

Also, tutorships for every subject are implemented. On this manner, students are individually supported and guided throughout the learning process for each subject in their syllabus. These tutorships are developed during the academic year.

Psychological Counselling

As an additional tool in the comprehensive training of students, universities can have units for students assistance, funded with their own budgets or through agreements with external institutions or entities. Psychological counselling is one of the services offered by these units.

Career Guidance

Among the tutorial systems to be developed by the University Student Statute there are guidance tutorships. These tutorships aim at supporting and guiding students in their transition into work world and in their professional development, making easier the initial development of their career and the access to continuing training.

On the other hand, as a result of the agreements reached between universities and the Spanish Public Employment Service (SEPE), the Employment Guidance and Information Centers (COIE) have been set up. They are in charge of guiding graduated and students in the last years of university studies for finding a job, and of informing about the existing professional training options. As for employment, they can offer stages in enterprises, training and professional insertion courses, or providing enterprises with a free service for covering some vacancies in an initial selection phase. In any case, every university sets the specific aspects of this service when it offers it.
