Curriculum Development

In its Manifesto for 2010 – 2014, the Government of the Slovak Republic declares to support implementation of the international dimension at all levels, so that education and research institutions communicate and compete together not only in the Slovak but also in international context. It will create financial incentive tools for higher education institutions to significantly improve their quality and international competitiveness. The need to support the possibility of spending a part of study by university students and teachers abroad, strengthening the role of foreign languages, or that of bilingual study programmes or study programmes instructed in foreign languages, has been also emphasized. The internationalization of education will be strengthened through increased number of foreign students coming to study at Slovak universities.

Following the Concept of Development of Higher Education, the system of study programmes was restructured. Several universities pay increased attention to the European trends in quality assurance and generate compatible models at the university level. Strengthening of the European dimension is carried out through the course content, opening new study programmes with European themes (European law in general as well with an emphasis on individual areas of economic life, European integration, European monetary policy, approximation of law, etc..), while these subjects have been gradually institutionalized through the centres, departments and institutes of European studies.

Universities are involved in projects within the Jean Monnet programme, which has been a part of the Lifelong Learning Programme since 2007. Through this program, Jean Monnet Chairs are established. In addition, several universities implement specific courses - modules that can be characterized as basic teaching units for semester courses. In accordance with the objectives and priorities of the Jean Monnet programme, the courses particularly focus on becoming familiar with European issues in the study programmes, not directly connected with the basic study programme of European Studies, Political Science, European law, etc.  In this way, European studies have been implemented in the study programme of natural sciences, humanities and technical fields of study in order to expand the knowledge base of future experts about the European dimension.

Partnership and Networks

In Slovakia also exists ECSA – network of European integration studies at Faculty of Law at Comenius University, and the Centre of Excellence at the Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences at Comenius University.

In the course of the last 10 years information and documentation centres have been established, which aim is gathering and dissemination of information on European topics concerning the universities as well as non-academic area, to support the research, teaching and European integration in broader context.

The National Europass Centre (NEC) serves to facilitate the provision of information and guidance on learning opportunities in Europe, the structure of educational systems and other issues related to mobility for learning purposes serves.

In higher education at international level, the Slovak Republic performs the tasks resulting from the membership in international organizations (OECD, UNO and UNO specialized agencies, Council of Europe, OSCE), participates in the activities of the Working Group on Education of the Central European Initiative (CEI), as well as international scholarship programmes such as CEEPUS – The Exchange Programme for Universities in Central and Eastern Europe, Visegrad Scholarship Programme of the International Visegrad Fund, and Slovakia 21 Modernization Programme.

The Slovak Republic is one of the key signatory countries, which signed the Bologna Declaration in 1999. The Bologna process plays a significant role in the reform of the Slovak higher education. In Slovakia, this activity is administered by the National Agency of the Lifelong Learning Programme within the Erasmus subprogramme. The National Team of Bologna experts consists of representatives of universities - experts in areas related to the Bologna process are involved in the implementation of the Bologna process at individual universities through direct consultation upon request, organization of seminars and conferences on various goals of the Bologna process. The National Team of Bologna Experts works under the auspices of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport SR, a member of the Working Group Bologna Follow-Up Group of the European Commission.
