Types of Institution


Vocational Secondary School (SOŠ)

Vocational secondary school is internally differentiated, preparing the pupils in at least two-year and at most five-year educational programme in the respective field of study.  SOŠ gives preparation for pupils mainly for performance of special activities, especially technical-economic, economic, pedagogical, health, social-legal, administrative, artistic and cultural. SOŠ provide vocational secondary education completed with the school-leaving examination and higher vocational education and enable their school-leavers to go directly to practice or apply for study at higher education institutions. The majority of  study fields last four years.

Inseparable part of vocational education and training at vocational secondary schools is practical teaching. It provides pupils with skills, habits and abilities inevitable for performance of individual professions and work activities. Pupils can complete it in a group form in schools, centres of practical training, vocational practice centres, school grounds, health care facilities or individually at practical teaching workplaces and workplaces of other legal and personal entities.

In order to increase accessibility of education and training in vocational secondary schools, centres of practical training, vocational practice centres and school grounds equiped with modern technologies which are beyond the framework of material-technological and spatial standards, it is necessary to support establishment and completion of new centres of vocational education and training in cooperation with regional self-governments and employers. In this context, support of establishment of centres of vocational education and training by means of providing special-purpose financial means to the founders of vocational secondary schools and of subsidies to founders of centres of practical training, centres of vocational practice and school grounds from the budgetary chapter of the Ministry of Education was made possible as of 1st January 2013.

The Decree No. 282/2009 of the Law Code on secondary schools as amended by subsequent provision stipulated the following types of SOŠ: vocational secondary school of metallurgy, mechanical engineering, technical, polytechnic, electrotechnical, chemical, food-industry, textile, woodwork, polygraphic, geodetic, building, traffic, post and telecommunications, rural development, agriculture, horse breeding and horsemen, forestry, gardening, vineyard-fruit-growing, fishery, veterinary, economic, business, trade and services, library and information studies, applied art, glassworks, healthcare, aviation-technical, railway, automobile, social-law, secondary trade school, traffic, woodwork, metallurgical, chemical and food-industrial, building  and geodetic secondary artistic school, animation, design, film, scenic designing, secondary healthcare school, traffic academy, hotel academy, commercial academy, pedagogical and cultural academy, pedagogical and social academy, school of applied art, secondary school of art, vocational secondary school of fire prevention, police vocational secondary school.


Conservatory

Conservatory provides complex artistic and artistic-pedagogical education. It prepares pupils for professional artistic occupation and for teaching artistic and vocational subjects within the educational programmes in the field of arts.

It is a type secondary school which is divided into the following two types:

  • music  and drama conservatory
  • dance conservatory

Music and drama conservatories provide for pupils education and training in the field of singing, music, scenic dance and music-drama art in six-year continuous educational programme, in which pupils upon completion of the fourth grade take the school-leaving examination and upon completion of the sixth grade take the graduation examination.

Dance conservatory provides education and training in the field of dance in eight-year continuous educational programme, which is completed by the school-leaving examination and graduation examination in the last grade.


Geographical Accessibility

In the network of SOŠ and conservatory the situation is different. Some of these schools are, e.g., of a single type, others are set up in accordance with their network at the level of the autonomous region. If such a school is not accessible to the pupil in the form of daily attendance, the pupil has a possibility to find accommodation in a youth hostel, which is usually a part of the school and besides accommodation it provides the pupil with other services, e.g., board, medical care, adequate use of leisure time in the form of various leisure activities, etc.

Admission Requirements and Choice of School

On admission to SOŠ of an artistic concentration, conservatories, one of the admission requirements is successful completion of the so called talent examination for verification of special abilities, skills and talent.

Age Levels and Grouping of Students

Special vocational training at the conservatory is carried out individually as well as in groups.  A group consists of 5 - 9 pupils in dependence on specialisation of study. At secondary medical schools at division of class into groups for practical part there are at most ten pupils and at least six pupils in a health establishment.

Organisation of the School Day and Week

In vocational secondary school a lesson takes 45 minutes, a lesson of vocational training and of vocational practice take 60 minutes.
