Academic Guidance

Guidance services in education sector are focused on support of education and training; provision of psychological, special-pedagogical, diagnostic, educational, guidance and preventive care; as well as provision of information from the area of career guidance for pupils. Guidance services are provided by:

  • Schools
  • School facilities of educational counselling and prevention –
  1. centre of pedagogical and  psychological counselling and prevention,
  2. centre of special pedagogical counselling.

In schools, guidance services are provided mostly by an educational counsellor, and by a teacher-coordinator of prevention in the area of risk behaviour prevention. The task of an educational counsellor is to provide guidance in solving personal, educational, professional and social needs of children, and career guidance.

If necessary, the educational counsellor will arrange pedagogical, psychological, social, psychoteherapeutical, re-educational and other services for children and their legal guardians, which coordinate in cooperation with class teachers. He/She closely cooperates with the school psychologist, school special pedagogue and experts from counselling facilities.


Psychological Counselling

The basic components of education counselling and prevention system are facilities of educational, psychological and special pedagogical counselling and prevention, whose part is:

  1. centre of pedagogical and psychological counselling and prevention,
  2. centre of special pedagogical  counselling.

Another components of education counselling and prevention system are:

  • educational counsellor,
  • school psychologist
  • school special pedagogue,
  • medical pedagogue,
  • social pedagogue,
  • prevention coordinator.

Particular components of the system of educational counselling and prevention cooperates mainly with family, school, school facility, employers, public administration authorities and non- profit organisation.

Under § 135 of the Act, No. 245/2008 on education and training (the Education Act) psychological counselling is provided for children, guardians and school staff at schools and school facilities via the activity of school psychologist or psychologist in order to develop their healthy personal development and mental health.  

Psychological activity is mainly aimed at:

  • research, interpretation, influencing and prognostic evaluation of children behaviour,
  • psychological guidance in school, educational, prevention and counselling facilities,
  • use of psycho diagnostic methods and tests in conditions of schools, educational, prevention and counselling facilities

Pedagogical-psychological counselling and prevention centre provides complex psychological, special pedagogical, diagnostic, educational, counselling and prevention care for children, beside children with health disability, mainly in the area of optimalisation, their personal, educational and professional development, care for talent development, elimination of psychological development defects and incidence of social pathologies, in children population in their territorial scope. They provide counselling services to their guardians and pedagogical staff.

Pedagogical-psychological counselling and prevention centre can be divided into the following departments:

  • counselling on personal development
  • counselling in educational development
  • counselling on social development and prevention,
  • counselling in career development,
  • psychotherapy,
  • methodology of educational counselling,
  • special pedagogical counselling.

Special pedagogical counselling centre provides professional services for children with disability, including children with development disorder, aiming to reach optimal development of their personality and social integration. Centre provides ambulant counselling activity for children in family, at school or school facility including provision of professional support to children and pedagogical staff, field workers and via short term stays of children or their guardians in this facility.

Professional-methodological material and technical assistance for professional staff of special pedagogical counselling centres and school special pedagogues is provided by the centres of special and pedagogical counselling centres. These are specialised on counselling for children with particular health disability as resource centres, even outside territorial jurisdiction of the local state administration in education.


Career Guidance

Educational counsellor fulfils the tasks of educational counselling, it means counselling in personal, educational and professional/career development. Prevention coordinator concentrates on primary prevention of social-pathological phenomena and on prevention of troublesome and delinquent development and social relations.

Educational counsellors are teachers at primary and secondary schools and special schools (where appropriate in school facilities as well), which deal with pupils in problem solving situations, or guidance in professional career choice and also with parents. They are professional consultants at schools, together with their pedagogical activity. They mediate interconnection of school with professional facilities and other facilities dealing with care for children. From career society point of view, career education (together with professional orientation) and guidance for pupils is priority.

Career guidance is one of main activities of pedagogical-psychological counselling and prevention centres, whose clients are pupils from last grades of primary and secondary schools. At the department of guidance in career development in pedagogical-psychological counselling and prevention centres  professional workers – methodologist for education (including career guidance) executes individual information and consultation activity, group educational and guidance activity for educational counsellor, mediates information on opportunities, conditions and on study requirements at secondary schools, higher education institutions, labour market and etc.

Introduction of compulsory subjects aimed at labour market orientation for final grades, is in frame of the state educational programmes applied at primary and secondary schools through the application of the Education Act. Recently, according to frame education plan there is allocated time limit 1 hour for the subject World of work for 5th to 9the grade of primary schools with Slovak language of instruction.  

Under the Act No. 184/2009 of Law Code on professional training, regional self-governance is responsible also for informing young people and their parents about labour market needs in given region and also for providing all relevant information about this category of guidance centres.  

In the Slovak Republic Euroguidance Centrum exists as a part of European network Euroguidance, which aim is to support development of career guidance and promote European dimensions in guidance, education and vocational training. Among the main tasks of Euroguidance centre belong information exchange in the area of guidance, vocational training, support of international education  and work mobility, cooperation in order to improve career guidance systems and realisation  of international programs aimed at the improvement of career services.
