Slovakia:Glossary

Responsibility at the central level – Central State Administration Bodies

The Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the SR is responsible for adult education at the national level.

The ministry prepares relevant legislation. Furthermore, it grants accreditation for each educational programme based on the further education accreditation commission’s  opinion. This process and the simultaneous control activity ensure the required quality of further vocational education and re-qualification education.

People interested in further education can use further education information system. On this website, the ministry regularly updates information on all educational programmes with valid accreditation. In addition, this portal contains all information and documents necessary for founders of further education as well.

National lifelong learning institute, founded as a directly managed organisation of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic is responsible for the implementation of the tasks and projects leading to the development of individual subsystems of lifelong learning and lifelong counselling.. The National Lifelong Learning Institute  is the national coordinator for the European adult learning programme and it also supports the Electronic platform of adult learning in Europe (EPALE)

Significant part of further vocational education and re-qualification education is arranged by the Centres of Labour, Social Affairs and Family (under the Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs and Family of the Slovak Republic) as an Active Labour Market Policy tool.

Within continuing education, the responsibility for the content and provision of further education for specific professional staff is often with individual ministries, in compliance with respective legislation (for example the Academy of Justice under the Ministry of Justice or education of health care professionals under the Ministry of Health).

Responsibility at the regional level – upper-tier territorial units

Regional self-government at the level of upper-tier territorial units is obliged to take care of multi-faceted development of its territory and its inhabitants’ needs. In the area of adult education and training, it mostly means the creation of conditions for the development of further education in the respective self- governing region.

Responsibility at the local level – municipalities

Similarly, self-governing municipalities should create conditions for health care provision, education, culture, education activities, leisure activities in arts, physical culture and sport. Positive examples of the implementation of these principles in adult education include the Academy of the Third Age, which has operated in Pezinok under the auspices of the municipal authority for several years.
