Pedagogical observation of children

Pedagogical observation is the basic method of pedagogical diagnostics - a tool for evaluation of learning outcomes and child’s personal progress.

The pedagogical diagnostication in kindergarten is realised by

  • the kindergarten teacher,
  • headteacher,
  • school inspector for kindergartens.

The pedagogical diagnostication isused

  • for identifying the actual level of the personal development of child,
  • for evaluation of efficiency of educational activity,
  • for evaluation, planning and improvement of educational activity and individual work with the child.

The pedagogical diagnostication support of the elements of key competences of the preschool-age child.

The teacher diagnosticates the individual progress of the child and his own educational influence upon the child.

Diagnostic methods

In the process of pedagogical diagnostication the kindergarten teachers use diagnostic methods :

  • observation,
  • observation and analysis of the play,
  • analysis and evaluation of activities, art poducts and products of child’s work activities.

Each product of the child art is assessed

  • individually with the child – in the form of dialogue,
  • publicly by presentation of the child product of every child (classroom decoration, exhibition for parents).

Recording findings from pedagogical diagnostics

Findings from pedagogical observation will be recorded in diagnostic sheets. Records  on children’s  current learning outcomes are being kept.

Records contain:

  • comments on child’s behaviour that requires further attention;
  • notes on situations and activities in which the observed behaviour occured;
  • child’s verbal comments concerning an activity;
  • notes on teacher’s own pedagogical performance

Each child has its own portfolio.

Cooperation with parents

Teachers cooperate with parents very closely when evaluating children – they regularly inform them about:

  • child’s results and progress in education;
  • communication level;
  • emotional stability;
  • level of interpersonal relationships with other children;
  • skills and abilities mastered by children;
  • children’s favourite/preferred activities, etc.
