Specialised Educational Support Services

Specialised Educational Support Services guarantee conditions whereby the integration of students into school life may be take place. The activity of the people in these services has to be conjugated with the guiding educational structures.

Specialised Educational Support Services include: the Psychology and Counselling Services; Educational Support Nucleus; other services offered by the school mainly in the field of school welfare, organising study rooms and extra-mural activities.

Without infringing upon the general and specific duties legally established, it is the duty of the Specialised Educational Support Services to:

  • Work together with the administration and management bodies and with the Group of Schools' educational guiding structures, jointly detecting specific educational and organisational needs and providing added suitable educational back up;

  • Make an active contribution in its work to diversify educational strategies and methods in order to promote children’s and young people’s development and learning skills at school;

  • Help to carry out flexible curricular management and tailor them to suit the students’ competences, capacities and interests as well as local realities;

  • Help in the job of up-grading the schools’ conditions and the educational environments so as to improve quality and educational innovation.

Psychology and Counselling Services

School and Vocational guidance is an important part of the educational process. The role of these services is to follow up the students’ progress throughout their school lives, helping to pinpoint their interests and aptitudes and intervening in the teaching-learning process.

The Ministry of Education, through Law No. 190/1991 of 17 May, set up the psychology and counselling services and integrated them into the school network, services became operational in pre-school establishments and in compulsory and secondary education with psychologists and trained social service workers.

The Psychology and Counselling Services are a specialised educational back-up unit that undertakes its activity together with the educational community in pre-school establishments and in the compulsory education (in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd stages) that compose the Groups of schools. The services offer psychological and psycho-pedagogical support as well as school and vocational counselling to students, teachers, parents and child-carers, and the schools’ non-teaching staff in the field of educational activity. Furthermore these services help towards developing a network of interpersonal relations within each of the schools in the Group; help to promote integrated activity that is carried out among the various schools in the group and promote interaction with the surrounding community.

In their role as a specialised educational back-up unit, they facilitate the development of the students’ personal and social identity by means of encouraging success at school. They follow up the students’ school life and make adjustments to the learning-teaching process while helping to find suitable answers to educational problems. They help in diagnosing students’ interests and skills and help to build up their life projects; they also help in bringing together the family, the school and the world of formative, cultural and professional activities.

In this way, the services ensure that they will provide psychological and educational back up and administer school and vocational counselling in an interdisciplinary dynamic based on mutual cooperation at school and with the environment in which the school is located.

Competences:

  • Help to draw up, carry out and develop the School’s Educational Project by making an inventory of the educational community’s needs and potentialities; help in planning and applying measures seeking to define strategies that will lead to a wider selection of offers and set up educational environments based on greater quality; interlock its activity with other services, mainly services working in health, social solidarity and safety, employment and vocational training so as to plan suitable intervention measures.

  • Provide psychological and pedagogical support needed by students, teachers, technical staff, educators and other workers in the educational process, and help to formulate suitable answers in the field of education.

  • Undertake joint work with other services and advisory bodies at school and with other educational staff in terms of organising and managing curricular and educational activities, adjusting the students’ learning-teaching processes; help to define strategies seeking to diversify the provision of learning opportunities within the classroom.

  • Undertake activity to help create awareness about opportunities arising in school, in the professions and in social life, such as those afforded by study visits, professional experiences and in training periods among others, aimed at students, their parents or child-carers and other members of the surrounding community. In doing so, the students will receive help in building their life projects as well as make the right choices that will influence their future options.
