The National plan for digital school (PNSD)

La reform law 107/2015 foresees the revision of the already existing National plan for digital school (PNSD) in order to harmonise all the measures and initiatives carried out since 2007, and to support the didactic innovation of schools by helping them to catch the opportunities offered by digital education.

The new PNSD is a plurennial plan addressed to all Italian schools. The strategy for the digital innovation of schools includes, among the other actions, the introduction, in each school, of digital promoters who have the role of helping schools in becoming centres of digital innovation.
The Plan answers to the need of building an idea of education in the digital era, through a process linked to the challenges that the society must face in terms of life-long and life-wide learning.

The PNSD is made up of three sections: tools, competences and contents, training and support. For each action, the PNSD has set goals and actions to reach the goals. The total number of actions is 35.

The actions for the ‘tools’ section include the provision of the broadband to all schools and, within 2016, a contribution to the connection fee. Special attention is given to the school premises in order to make them more functional to learning, with spaces able to allow different types of activities centred on innovation.

Moreover, it is foreseen the creation of a digital identity of students and teachers with a single authentication system for entering all services of the public administration (SPID).

Actions for the section ‘competences of students and teachers’ and for the ‘contents’ section, go from the definition of a common frame of digital competences for students, to the introduction of the computational thought in primary school, to the update of the curriculum for the subject ‘technology’. These actions meet the need of including the digital competences in the wider frame of learning through competences and of releasing digital competences from the traditional role of simple tool for teaching, also for developing a critical approach to the use of technologies. Moreover, the PNSD strengthens the link between school and work, through entrepreneurship education and the promotion of STEAM (sciences, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) and digital careers.

For the third section ‘training and support’, actions focus on strengthening the digital competences of school staff through initial training and CPD activities in order to support schools in the digital innovation foreseen by the PNSD. The recently introduced figure of the digital promoter in each school will support schools in this training path with the help of the ‘team for innovation’ made up of other three teachers.

Training for digital promoters and members of the team started in early 2016 and will be followed by the specific training for school and administrative managers and, in a second step, by the specific training for all administrative and teaching staff.
