CFU/CFA

CFUs are the credits given at completion of each university course. Each credit is equivalent to 25 hours of full-time study and one year is equivalent to 60 credits.

CFAs are the credits given at completion of each High level arts and music education (Afam) course. Each credit is equivalent to 25 hours of full-time study and one year is equivalent to 60 credits.

Diploma accademico

General term indicating the qualification awarded within the High level arts and music education (Afam) system. Diploma accademico di primo livello certifies the completion of a first cycle courses. The Diploma accademico di secondo livello certifies the completion of a second cycle course. The Diploma accademico di formazione alla ricerca is awarded at the end of a third cycle course.

Diploma di perfezionamento o Master

Diploma awarded by institutes belonging to the High level arts and music education (AFAM) system at completion of second-cycle higher education courses. Courses last, at least, 1 year (60 credits). The term 'Master' does not refer to the 'Master degree', the second-cycle qualification of the Bologna process.

diritto-dovere

Term introduced by Reform Law no. 53 of 2003. It means the right/duty of all to receive education and training for at least 12 years or, anyhow, as long as they have obtained a certificate within 18 years of age.

laurea

Qualification awarded at completion a first-cycle programme (3 years of studies corresponding to 180 credits). Laurea specialistica/magistrale is the qualification awarded at completion of a second cycle university course (2 years of studies corresponding to 120 credits). Laurea is described in details in the section on first-cycle programmes. Laurea magistrale is described in details in the section on second-cycle programmes.

liceo

General term indicating institutes of general upper secondary education, preparing students to the university studies. The licei specialize students in: art subjects, classical studies, scientific studies, music and dance, foreign languages, human sciences.

Master universitario

Certificate issued at higher level, after completion of scientific specialization courses and high permanent education courses. The minimum lenght of courses is 1 year (60 credits). The term 'Master' does not refer to the 'Master degree', the second-cycle qualification of the Bologna process.

Scuola paritaria

Paritarie schools are non-State schools that, on request and on certain conditions, are recognised by the State as having the same status of State schools.Paritarie schools are described in details in the sections on private education and private education funding.

POF

Piano triennale dell'offerta formativa (Three-year plan of the educational offer): basic document that describes the cultural and planning identity of the single school institution. It defines the curricular, extra-curricular, educational and organizational projects that each school adopts every three years according to the school autonomy regulations.
