Curriculum, Subjects, Number of Hours - Vocational Training Institutes (IEK)

By virtue of Law 4186/2013, in order to formulate curricula for each specialty, the related occupational profiles are taken into consideration, if there are any, certified by the National Organisation for the Certification of Qualifications & Vocational Guidance (EOPPEP), or the required vocational qualifications. Curricula are reassessed, evaluated and, if deemed necessary, renewed every six (6) years at least.

The initial vocational training curricula are depicted on the respective study guides per orientation groups of professions, sector or specialty.  The study guide for each specialty includes an explicit vocational profile, learning outcomes being analyzed in knowledge, skills and capabilities for each subject and specialty.   The study guide includes also credit points, correspondence between specialty and candidates classification, timetable for the teaching material of theoretical or laboratory section, prepared in accordance with the learning outcomes sought after for each subject, teachers qualifications, teaching method and equipment and means of instruction.  The curricula for each specialty of initial vocational training are drawn up and supervised by the General Secretariat of Lifelong Learning.

Attendance at IEK -of a total of five (5) semesters- is shared in four (4) semesters of theoretical and laboratory training of a total duration of 1200 hours of specialized training, as well as one Semester of Internship or Apprenticeship of a total duration of 960 hours.

Teaching is organized in specialties and each specialty offers its own, distinct and integrated package of subjects, organized in specific teaching hours per week.

Training includes:

  • Theoretical Subjects; they are taught by one instructor, only in classrooms and aim at trainees acquiring the knowledge required to understand the cognitive object of their training.
  • Laboratory Courses, carried out exclusively in laboratories and aim at the consolidation of the theoretical part of the training and the acquisition of skills.  They are carried out solely in laboratory areas, whereas they may provided to all or a part of the registered trainees of each class.
  • Mixed Courses, requiring simultaneous theoretical training and skills acquisition.

At the completion of one hundred (100) teaching hours of training, the number of theoretical, laboratory and mixed courses provided for by the timetable, must have been completed as well.  Upon the completion of the training hours per semester, the entire ratio of theoretical, laboratory and mixed courses, as provided for, must have been completed (Ministerial Decision 5954/23-6-2014).

Pursuant to Law 4186/2013, IEKs may offer distance learning curricula, enabling students to obtain a Vocational Training Certificate and take part in EOPPEP certification procedures.

Teaching Methods and Materials - Vocational Training Institutes (IEK)

Vocational Training Institutes' (IEK) main task is the provision of high-level qualifications, with a view to assisting trainees getting absorbed into the labor market.

This is achieved by:

  • The selection and development of accredited initial vocational training programs that correspond to specific job profiles, based on specialies with high labor market demand.
  • The selection of trainers with appropriate knowledge or experience to provide high quality training.
  • The accommodation in fully equipped laboratories of formal education structures, thus ensuring a suitable environment for comprehensive training.

Due to the nature of the training provided, neither specific teaching material nor specific textbooks are used in IEK, as it happens in the structures of formal education.  The instructor is independent and autonomous both in finding teaching materials and the methodology.  However, they are assisted in their duties by the Deputy Principal of each IEK, who gives guidelines.  Teamwork form of teaching is encourages, as is every method in general The teaching methods used aiming at offering modern and qualitative training, combining theoretical presentation and laboratory practice.  Practical training in laboratories is part of the curricula.  Visits to enterprises are foreseen, as a means to perceive the true dimension of labor, in order to assimilate and transform theoretical knowledge and facilitate inclusion of trainees in the labor market.

Laboratory Centers operate in an independent administrative structure as school units and are in cooperation with the Vocational Upper Secondary Schools, the Vocational Schools and the IEK of their area.  They are formed by at least two school units, while in their premises operate laboratories of different fields and expertise aiming at improving the provided laboratorial practice to the students of the school units that are included in the laboratory centers.
