European, Global and Intercultural Dimension in Curriculum Development

Second Chance Schools (SDE)

Second Chance Schools in Greece are Adult Education Schools operating in line with the vision and fundamental principles of Adult Education.  Second Chance Schools (SCS) nurture the broad development of the students and enable them to actively engage in the current economic, social and cultural setting whilst smoothly entering the job market. SCSs also seek to foster social skills and enable students to develop positive attitudes as active citizens and members of the society, at a local, national, European and international level. Second Chance Schools (SCS) programmes have incorporated the European dimension and innovation by adopting good practices in teaching. Cross-cultural communication and dialogue is achieved through integration into the classroom of foreign and Roma students.

Curricula are flexible and open to adaptations, modifications and refinement of their objectives and content as means of adjustment to the students’ educational needs.

The teaching methods are innovative and customised based on the different way adult learners develop knowledge, as well as on their particular characteristics. Teaching methods favour the experiential approach to knowledge, group learning activities and interdisciplinary approaches.

Students at these schools are not simply encouraged to acquire knowledge, but social skills as well, including communication, team work and problem-solving skills. Several Advisory Bodies have been set up in order to facilitate their operation, including. 1. A Pedagogical Advisor, 2.  A Career Advisor and 3.  An Educational Psychologist. Second Chance Schools adopt principles of the multiliteracy pedagogy. The core curriculum includes:

 a. Linguistic Literacy (Greek language), b. Numerical Literacy, c. Computer Literacy, d. Linguistic Literacy (English language), e. Social Literacy, f. Scientific Literacy, g. Environmental Literacy, h. Arts and Cultural Education Activities i.e all-year-round and integral to education sports and art activities that allow for free-flowing creativity and encourage effective free time management.

Partnerships and Networks

Certain initiatives have been developed, enhancing, amongst other things, the European, international and intercultural dimensions and facilitating the mobility of individuals.  Some of these initiatives are outlined below:

  • Europass: Each (EU and European Economic Area) country accommodates a National Europass Centre for the coordination of Europass-related activities.  National Europass Centres are the first point of contact for any person or organisation interested in using Europass or finding out more about it.  A National Europass Centre has been operating in Greece since 2005 and is represented by the National Organisation for the Certification of Qualifications and Vocational Guidance (EOPPEP). It provides a single national framework that aims to increase transparency of qualification and mobility of citizens in Europe for educational and vocational purposes.  Europass includes five European documents available in 26 languages (Curriculum Vitae, Language Passport, Europass Mobility, Certificate Supplement, Diploma Supplement).  It facilitates the process of looking for employment or training in Europe, since it makes a person's skills and qualifications clearly understood throughout Europe.
  • European Credit Transfer System for Vocational Education and Training (ECVET): ECVET is a system established for the recognition, accumulation and transfer of credits in education and training.   This system facilitates the assessment and validation of learning outcomes, skills and qualifications obtained by a person during their vocational education and training in their country or other EU countries.  IKY, as one of the two National Agencies for Erasmus+ European Programme, is responsible for coordinating ECVET activities in Greece
  • Euroguidance: The Euroguidance Network provides Counselling and Career Guidance services in Europe.  In Greece, the Euroguidance Centre is represented by EOPPEP. Amongst other things, the network promotes the European dimension in the areas of Counselling and Career Guidance, interculturalism and the enhancement of mobility in Europe for educational and training purposes.
  • PLOTEUS European Portal on Learning Opportunities:  PLOTEUS has been given the task to provide information on learning opportunities in Europe for students, employees, job seekers, parents, career advisors and teachers. More specifically, it provides information on:  Opportunities to study – Educational systems – Exchanges and grants – Contact Points (communication) – Relocating (PLOTEUS)
