ECEC in Greece uses the split system instead of a unitary setting.  This means that it structures ECEC services according to the age of children.  Hence, the responsibility for ECEC governance, regulation and funding is divided in-between two authorities: a) the Ministry of Culture, Education and Religious Affairs assumes responsibility for children aged 4 through 6 years and b) the Ministry of Interior and Administrative Reconstruction, which caters for children up to 4 years old.

It is important to note that educational guidelines normally apply to provision for older children and the Ministry of Culture, Education and Religious Affairs (responsible for 4-6 year olds) has not introduced any reforms in the past three years, except regulatory procedures (i.e. the necessary documentation of the children’s enrollment in pre-primary schools).  On the other hand, neither does the Ministry of Interior and Administrative Reconstruction (responsible for children up to 4 years old) have any reforms to present during the same period.

Ministerial Decision 13072/D1/5-8-2016 – All Day Pre-primary School

A new Ministerial Decision 130272/D1/5-8-2016 establishes a Single Type of All-Day Pre-primary School.  The daily timetable and teaching hours are scheduled to change starting from school year 2016-2017.

The compulsory timetable in the Single Type All-Day Pre-primary School is twenty-five (25) teaching hours per week lasting from 08:30 to 13:00.  The optional all-day programme can be extended to 16:00.  If parents apply for it, pupils can be dropped off early in the morning from 07:45 to 08:30, but this applies only for pupils that opt for the optional all-day programme.
