Academic Guidance

All bodies constituting the National Network of Lifelong Learning provide information regarding the possibilities of education and training offered. Within the framework of Lifelong Learning Schools operating in the country’s Higher Education Institutions, the existing structures and student support services are also used by the adult students of Institutions.  As far as the Hellenic Open University (Elliniko Anoichto Panepistimio) is concerned, counselling in adult education issues is carried out through group counselling sessions organised at the EAP premises and in other cities/towns.  In accordance with the Law 4186/2013, the number of these sessions should not be smaller than the number of the subsections of a thematic area of studies, while the participants are comprised of one member of the teaching personnel and the students that are under his/her supervision.  The arrangement of group counselling meetings may be replaced by virtual classes that rely mainly on technology, communication and information services.

Adult educational guidance in the Second Chance Schools (Scholeia Defteris Efkairias) is carried out by teachers. Teachers are responsible for providing counselling services to adult students of Second Chance Schools by supporting them throughout their progression.  For the design of adult education curricula, the special characteristics of adult students have been taken into account in order to administer flexible programmes that meet individual learning needs. Additionally, counselling services in each Second Chance School are provided by a Career Advisor and an Advisory Psychologist. Career Advisors are responsible for:

  • (a) participating in each class one hour a week
  • (b) providing individual and group counselling services in order to assist and support students with their entry or re-entry in the job market
  • (c) looking for sources of information, collecting, classifying and providing information in order to deal with student enquiries
  • (d) communicating with other bodies and services specializing in job market issues, as well as educational and training bodies.

The responsibilities of Advisory Phychologists are outlined in the next chapter, on Phychological Support.

Reference should also be made to the database "Ploigos" of the National Organisation for the Certification of Qualifications & Vocational Guidance (EOPPEP). The database "Ploigos" is the official National Database of Education Opportunities in Greece.  It is a constant source of information on education and training opportunities, available to both the Greek public and the citizens of the European Union through the European portal Ploteus II.   "Ploigos" presents the educational opportunities offered in Greece, at all levels of education.  It refers to initial training that takes place during the early stages of one's life and before entering the labour market and also continuing education opportunities that spread throughout the life of the individual.  In addition, it covers the whole range of levels and types of education such as general education, technical-vocational education, initial training, ongoing lifelong training, adult education, open and distance learning, education of specific social groups etc.  Users of "Ploigos" may be students, parents, unemployed and employed people, as well as Counselling and Career Guidance Counselling professionals.

Finally, the Counselling and Career Guidance Centers (KESYP) of the Ministry of Education, Research and Religious Affairs is available to young people up to the age of 25. KESYPs operate in all prefectures of the country providing educational and vocational counseling and information to young people and their parents. They also support the work of teachers who are teaching School Career Guidance (SEP) in their schools. KESYPs are staffed with specialized teachers and offer information aiming to expand students' options.

Psychological Counselling

Student counseling in the corresponding Higher Education Institutions centers serves also students’ needs in lifelong learning.

Moreover, in the context of Schools for Parents Programmes, sections are taught regarding the support and healthcare of socially vulnerable groups and the counselling of disabled children’s parents.  In addition, counsellors/ psychologists also provide support to trainees of Second Chance Schools.

Furthermore, Lifelong Learning Centers offer educational support programmes addressed to the general population and to socially vulnerable groups. Such support programmes are the following for example: 'Coping with social crisis in daily life', 'Roma-Support in daily life' and 'Support of Detainees'.

A Psychologist Consultant offers his services in Second Chance Schools by being present for one hour per week in each class.  More specifically, the counselor/psychologist has the following responsibilities:

  • a) provides individual and group counseling to students
  • b) offers support to individuals or groups that find it difficult to function within the specific educational environment
  • c) co-operates, informs and supports teachers to address any problems that may arise.

Career Guidance

The National Organisation for the Certification of Qualifications & Vocational Guidance of the Ministry of Education, Research and Religious Affairs is the national executive body of Career Guidance.  Its website offers a portal of lifelong career development for adults, through which interested parties can chat with specialised Career Guidance Counsellors through instant messaging.  Moreover, adults can complete tests on their interests, values tests and professional decisions tests. Moreover, they can develop career planning documentation (the so-called e-Portfolio), and find general information on the labour market and education/training in Greece and Europe.

Free Career Counseling, Career Guidance and Information services are provided by various public bodies to anyone who is interested, regardless of age.

  • The Counseling and Career Guidance Centers (KESYPs) of the Ministry of Education, Research and Religious Affairs, operating on a  regional Education Directorate level, serve students and young people up to the age of 25, parents and any other interested party.
  • The Greek Manpower Organisation (OAED) provides counselling services to the unemployed to facilitate their entry to the job market. These services involve Counselling & Career Guidance - Career Management, Job Search Counselling and Entrepreneurial Initiatives Counselling.  Individuals who are interested in looking for employment in a European country can address the EURES Network of OAED.
  • Counselling services and information are also provided at the Information Centre of Workers & Unemployed GSEE, at the Employment Office & Business Staff of ACCI (Athens Chamber Of Commerce and Industry), the Entrepreneurship Support Network for Small Businesses of the Hellenic Confederation of Professionals, Craftsmen and Merchants (GSVEE) and the General Secretariat for Lifelong Learning and Youth of the Ministry of Education, Research and Religious Affairs.
  • Career Guidance is also an essential service in the context of various training and support programmes, targeted at young entrepreneurs, employees, unemployed and socially vulnerable groups.  The Ministry of Labour, Social Insurance and Social Solidarity is responsible for the programmes’ implementation.  Last but not least, it is important to note that the programmes are co-funded by the European Social Fund.

Finally, EOPPEP has developed a Private Entities list, which includes both natural persons and legal entities of Counselling and Career Guidance that have received relevant authorisation from the organisation.  The list serves to map and record entities providing Counselling and Career Guidance to citizens of all ages in the private sector.
