Academic Guidance

There are various bodies in France that implement information services in order to guide adults towards ongoing vocational training. These are mainly bodies that provide ongoing education.

Psychological Counselling

Adult education in France is run locally (by companies and/or regions); it is hard to list all guidance programmes since they depend to a large extent on interregional academic conventions concluded between academies and regions/States. Nonetheless specific guidance activities can be mentioned that are specific to two bodies that provide strong action in adult ongoing education: the GRETAs and Pôle Emploi.

One of the Gretas' main remits is to help define the training adult's qualification pathway and project. The following are among Gretas' services:

  • draft a skills assessment
  • help in developing occupational projects
  • organise career assessments
  • help in occupational conversion, prepare for a job
  • develop personal skills, in particular in an occupational situation
  • mentor candidates in validating their acquired experience
  • help in preparing for an entrance exam to various public functions
  • support job seekers in their return to work

Likewise, Pôle Emploi's remit is to welcome people and provide them with information, guidance and supervision in their search for work, a training course or advise about their future.

Career Guidance

Schemes exist in France that are designed at national level that enable adults to have access to guidance services (with the Gretas or other bodies), the main one being the right to skills assessment.

Droit au bilan de compétences - Right to skills assessment

The “droit au bilan de competences” - right to skills assessment, established after the law of May 2004 on lifelong vocational training allows employees to take stock of their skills, aptitudes and motivations and define (or redefine) a professional or training plan. Conducted by an outside intervener, according to very precise stages, the skills assessment may be decided by the employer or implemented on the initiative of the employee, within the framework of specific leave. The employee, justifying at least five months of salaried work, including 12 months in the current company, may apply for leave of absence for a maximum of 24 hours from his/her employer to conduct skills assessment.
