Overview – Political, Social and Economic Background and Trends

The Czech Republic is a small advanced country (population 10.5 million) located in the heart of Europe with a long industrial tradition and a highly decentralized administration (14 regions and 6,000 municipalities). The population is linguistically homogenous, the official language is Czech. National minorities are not numerous. Religious faith is traditionally very low. Only some 20% of the population is religious. The unemployment rate was 5.0 % in 2015.

The country has an exceptionally long tradition of having high educational status in the broadest strata of the population; 93% of adults aged 25-64 years have at least upper secondary education. Following a substantial fall in the 1990's the average number of children born to one woman has increased from minimum 1.13 in the year 1999 to 1.50 in 2008. Subsequent slight decrease in fertility rate has been replaced by an increase during last years. The fertility rate reached  1.57 in 2015.
These irregularities in the demographic development result in capacity problems in the school system. Expenditure on education as a share of GDP amounted to 4.1 % in 2015.
