Requirements

Teacher qualifications for basic school (základní škola), upper secondary school (střední škola) and tertiary professional schools (vyšší odborná škola) are stipulated in the Act on Education Staff (see more in the part on Initial Education for Teachers Working in Early Childhood and School Education). Teachers participating in the education of adults in schools do not need any special training for teaching adults.

A teacher at an institution for the further education of education staff can acquire professional qualifications through completing an accredited Master's study programme in the field that corresponds to the character of the educational subject and through teaching practice or practice that corresponds to the character of the educational subjects with the length of 4 years minimum.

A teacher at a language school authorised to organise state language examinations (for more details see the section on Language education in the Chapter 8 Adult Education and Training) can acquire professional qualifications through higher education study programmes:

  • Master's study programme in the field of pedagogical sciences focused on educating teachers of foreign languages;
  • Master's study programme in the field of social sciences focused on foreign languages followed by a) accredited Bachelor's study programme in the field of pedagogical sciences, b) a life-long learning programme organised by a higher education institution with a focus on education, or c) study of pedagogy;
  • Master's study programme in the field of pedagogical sciences, passing the language examination from the given language on the minimum level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and supplementary didactic study of the particular language;
  • any Master's study programme, passing the language examination from the given language at the minimum level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, programme of lifelong learning at a higher education institution focused on teacher training and supplementary didactic study of the particular language.

For more information on gaining qualification within in-service teachers training (life-long learning programme organised by a higher education institution, study of pedagogy, supplementary didactic study) see the part on Continuing Professional Development for Teachers Working in Early Childhood and School Education.

For the qualifications of teachers of the basic art school, see the section on Upper secondary education – vocational subjects in the part on Initial Education for Teachers Working in Early Childhood and School Education.

For academics teaching in the lifelong learning programmes in higher education institutions specific conditions are not laid down. For more details, see the part on Initial Training of Teachers in Higher Education.

Various professional associations set forth their own requirements for the competence of lecturers who work in internal educational systems of relevant sectors (fields).

The qualifications of trainers and instructors working for commercial institutions, as well as the quality of teaching in these institutions are rarely monitored.
