Home Schooling

Minors may, under certain conditions, satisfy the compulsory schooling requirement by being home schooled. Minors subject to compulsory schooling who are not enrolled in an educational institution which is organised or grant-aided by the French Community or recognised as providing education that satisfies the compulsory education requirement fall within the home schooling category (instruction by the parents, by a tutor, in an unrecognised private school, or in a youth protection institute, for example).

Home schooling requires a declaration, based on a compulsory model, which must be submitted by 1 October in the school year. In addition to the declaration requirement, those responsible for the minor of compulsory schooling age are subject to two other obligations:

  • to submit the minor for the inspection of the level of studies;
  • to enroll the minor in the certificative tests (in the case of primary education, this means the common external test organised with a view to issuing the certificate of primary education).

Should the General Inspection Service find the level of studies to be inadequate in accordance with the defined procedure, the minor must be enrolled in an educational institution.

The number of home schooled children is very low (several hundred for the whole of compulsory education).

Other Variants

Distance learning programmes provide courses for children in primary education who reside outside the country.Some schools have adopted particular pedagogic methods inspired by the educational principles of pedagogues such as Decroly, Freinet or Steiner; the schools are usually named after these.

More and more schools or sites are introducing language immersion in German, English or Dutch.

Teaching in hospital is also possible. It allows continuous monitoring for sick or hospitalized students. This type of education depends on type 5 of specialised education. This teaching is meant for children or adolescents with physical problems and / or suffering from a psychological or psychiatric disorder. These students are supported by a clinic, a hospital or a medico-social institution. The original school, however, keeps the competence for the certification of the student. If hospitalization is short (a few days), pedagogical action is towards timely remediation, reasoning or research tasks, according to the educational needs and health status of the student. If hospitalization lasts longer (weeks or months), schooling requires regular cooperation between the hospital school, the original school and if necessary with home teachers so that the subjects taught and to study are properly followed and so that the reinstatement of the pupil in his/her school of origin takes place in good conditions.
