Initial Education for Teachers Working in Early Childhood and School Education

Since 1 September 2007, another two types of initial teacher training programme have existed:

  • the integrated teacher training programme at university colleges, leading exclusively to a Bachelor’s degree in education: nursery education, primary education or secondary education;
  • the specific teacher training programme at a university college, university or Centre for Adult Education, which is taken in addition to or after a subject-specific initial programme and/or professional experience.

Both types lead to the same professional title: the teacher’s diploma.

These programmes also confer competence to teach in part-time arts education and adult education.

Conditions of Service for Teachers Working in Early Childhood and School Education

The conditions of service for teaching staff are determined by different personnel statuses. For elementary, secondary, adult and part-time arts education, there is a separate personnel status for GO! (education of the Flemish Community) on the one hand and subsidised education on the other. However, the differences between the two statuses are being phased out.

In higher education the personnel status for the university colleges differs from that for the universities. Here too, however, moves are being made towards an integrated personnel status.

Continuing Professional Development for Teachers Working in Early Childhood and School Education

Continuing professional development is left to the initiative of teachers and schools. However, schools are required to draw up an in-service training plan, on the basis of which they may draw on limited financial support for the in-service training attended by teachers. The government also sets priority in-service training themes every year with respect to which in-service training projects may be followed free of charge.

Many in-service training initiatives are offered by the network-specific pedagogical counselling services, which receive an annual budget for the purpose from the government.

Due to a lack of success the extra provisions enabeling in-company work experience placements for teachers have been abaondened.

After the initial teacher training programmes, further professional development and specialisation for teaching staff is possible via various advanced Bachelor’s programmes in education (e.g. for special education, extending special needs provision in mainstream schools and remedial learning, or school development).
