The Chair and the presenters of the BDES 2020 online sessions (23 to 30 November 2020) are briefly introduced below, in chronological order.

Statbel (Statistics Belgium, BE) - ESSnet Big Data II Deputy coordinator, responsible for internal and external communication and collaboration

Marc Debusschere is Statbel's Coordinator Administrative & Big Data, with as previous professional backgrounds heading the Short Term Indicators unit, Director Information & Communication and Spokesperson, Quality Manager, builder and first Editor-in-chief of Eurostat's online publication platform Statistics Explained. His present mission mainly consists of connecting to big data statistics stakeholders at the level of Belgium and its regions, EU and internationally, in administrations, academia and business, and in actively engaging in national and European big data projects to foster the adoption of new data sources and smart statistics in Statbel's statistical output.

NSI (Statistics Bulgaria, BG) - Workpackage Leader WPC

Dr. Stateva has over 24 years of working experience in the BNSI in various expert and management positions. Her key qualifications are mainly connected to maintaining the QMS (Quality Management System) of BNSI, implementing the SDMX statistical and technical standards, and big data sources in official statistics.

During the last five years, she was mainly engaged as an expert in ESSnet Big Data I and as WPC leader in ESSnet Big Data II, exploring the various types of big data sources and their usage in official statistics.

Dr. Alexander Kowarik is head of the methods unit at Statistics Austria with more than 10 years of experience working at a NSI. He is an active contributor to the R open source community with a focus on official statistics application.

Giovanna Brancato

Istat (Statistics Italy, IT) - Contributor WPK

Giovanna Brancato has been working at Istat for 25 years, being responsible for the quality unit during the last 10 years. She has been member in all most important international groups and task forces concerning quality and she has coordinated various international projects. Recently, she left the quality function, having been appointed to the coordination of a new statistical register on education.

Piet Daas

CBS (Statistics Netherlands, NL) - Contributor WPK

Piet Daas is a senior methodologist at the Department of Methodology of Statistics Netherlands where he leads the research on big data. He is professor by special appointment of ‘Big Data in Official Statistics’ at the Eindhoven University of Technology where his work focuses on the development of big data methodology. Apart from that, Piet teaches big data (online) at the University of Utrecht, University of Maryland, and the University of Mannheim.

Sónia Quaresma has a Computer Science degree with a major in Artificial Intelligence from IST - Lisbon and a master in Information Management - NOVA IMS Lisbon. She currently works at the Portuguese NSI - INE in the IT & Methodology department in the Data Warehouse Team.
